Student Jobs

 

International students are entitled to work in France provided that:

- they have a residence permit (carte de séjour)
- they are enrolled in an institution participating in the Health Student Plan, component of the French national health program (sécurité sociale)
- they are not recipients of a French government scholarship

EMPLOYMENT IDEAS

The most common student jobs are: teaching languages, baby sitting, au-pair family assistance, translation, delivery of advertising material, restaurants, hotel desk clerk, tutoring young children, telemarketing.

MINIMUM WAGE

The minimum legal wage is € 7.19 per hour, before mandatory deductions for social benefits. The amount is equal to the minimum allowance known as SMIC (salaire minimum interprofessionel de croissance).

WORK REGULATIONS

A student is entitled to work a maximum of 884 hours per year provided that:
- he/she will work part-time during the academic year (19.5 hours per week)
- he/she is allowed to work full-time during the summer vacation season

WORK AUTHORIZATION

Students from non-European Union countries must apply in person for a temporary employment authorization at the Employment office in their area, known as DDTEFP – Direction Départementale du Travail, de l’Emploi et de la Formation Professionnelle. Obtaining the authorization takes around three weeks.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

- offer of employment signed by the employer including the following information: job description, starting and ending dates of employment, monthly or hourly wage, location, number of hours, time schedule

- request for temporary employment authorization

- copy of valid residency permit showing your student status

- copy of passport showing your identity

- copy of valid student ID card

- proof of residence (invoice of gas, electricity, telephone...)

- passport size photographs

- a stamped, self-addressed envelope
