French universities are increasingly open to international cooperation at the PhD level and to collaborative research projects.

Special provisions are made for applicants from outside France. Research activities are an integral part of universities.

There are 315 doctoral schools in France, 4000 doctoral candidates and over 1200 research laboratories affiliated with both universities and research organizations.

A number of positions are reserved for foreign candidates in the competitive examinations, and various temporary opportunities are available for foreign research assistants.
